What is ngdp?

The national graduate development programme for local government (ngdp) combines your desire to develop and make a difference with local government’s drive to develop its future leaders and serve people and places better. Through taking on real challenges on the programme you’ll learn quickly and gather the skills and experience you need for a fulfilling career.

Commissioned, managed and delivered by the Improvement and Development Agency for local government (IDeA), the ngdp combines local placements in a host local authority with an integrated national programme of learning and development.

We can provide you with a launch pad for a successful leadership career in local government. We also recognise you as an individual and will place you right at the centre of your own career development.

Local government is the largest and most diverse employer in the UK and is responsible for a wide range of services which support people and communities. It offers excellent career opportunities within a socially responsible work environment.

The ngdp will provide you with a rich experience, based around placements that will engage you in work that is core to the council’s priorities within their local communities.

There are four key components to the ngdp:

  • A national induction event designed to start you on your career journey
  • A series of generic placements and projects within a host local authority
  • A programme of learning and development with national and locally delivered elements
  • Support from a network of people including a dedicated placement co-ordinator, mentors, managers and a national network of ngdp trainees and alumni
